What is a Manner?

A manner is a type of social behaviour. Manners are followed by social groups called societies, families, and classes. Manners are rules of conduct which individuals must follow to become acceptable to the social group they live with.

Types of Manners

Manners can be broadly classified into three main types. The three main types of manners are listed below:
  • Indoor Manners - Rules of conduct which are followed inside the homes of social groups are known to be called Indoor Manners.
  • Outdoor Manners - Rules of conduct which are followed outside the homes of social groups are known to be called Outdoor Manners.
  • Institutional Manners - Rules of conduct which are followed inside institutions like schools, colleges, and work places are known to be called Institutional Manners.

Features of Manners

Each type of manner presents a distinct feature set of its own. Some of the common features of manners are:
  • Manners of Hygiene - Manners of hygiene help individuals stay fresh and clean, and are followed by individuals to keep themselves free from dirt and germs.
  • Manners of Politeness - Manners of politeness help individuals in living together peacefully, and are followed by individuals to express their good intent in social interactions.
  • Manners of Culture - Manners of culture help individuals remember which social group they belong to, and are followed by individuals to become accepted within their social group.

Benefits of Manners

Following manners can help different individuals accept each other in a social group. Some of the benefits of manners are listed below:
  • Good manners help foster togetherness in a social group or community of people.
  • Presenting good manners often brings comfort and joy to others, around an individual.
  • Manners help make peace by making individuals socially acceptable to the social group they are in.

Doubts of Manners

When good manners are not followed or when manners are followed differently, doubtful effects could occur. Some of the doubts of manners are listed below:
  • Manners create borders between social groups.
  • Not following manners could lead to rejection, especially when following bad manners has become a habit in an individual.
  • Manners are responsible for alienation between people of different social groups, as opposed to bringing people together.

Learning Manners

Manners are proof that individuals live together. Manners can be perceived as good or bad according to situations they are practiced in. Overall, everyone must practice good manners and present the most common mannerisms they are familiar with to become widely accepted by all social groups.
